Three Star maintain five-point lead on top

KATHMANDU: Three Star Club maintained a five-point lead on top of the standings over second-placed Laxmi Hyundai Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) after playing a 1-1 draw in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull ‘A’ Division Super League here today.

Skipper Santosh Sahukhala put Three Star ahead in the 15th minute before Fils Sergio Chico levelled the scores eight minutes later. The draw meant leaders Three Star (39) still hold five-point lead over second-placed MMC (34).

In an entertaining match, Sahukhala put the two-time champions ahead scoring from the box in the 15th minute. Sahukhala raced to meet Kiran Chemjong’s goalkick and squeezed past advancing MMC goalie Emmanuel Dare. But Three Star’s joy was shortlived when Chico headed home veteran Nabin Neupane freekick in an unguarded post after eight minutes.

A notable chance for Three Star to restore the lead came four minutes before the break but Dare denied Adewumi Femi before Victor and Bikram Lama missed in rebound.

MMC would have still walked away with three points had only unmarked Chico made a contact to skipper Anil’s cross in the dying moments of the game. MMC’s Mbile Leonel Stephan was red carded after the defender threw a punch on teammate Sulav Maskey after the game.

“My boys gave their best,” said Three Star coach Pradip Humagain adding they would now focus on claiming the RCT scalp to stake a strong claim on the league title. Pradip’s MMC counterpart Chhiring Lopsang was equally satisfied with the performance of his players.
