Lifetime Achievement award for Bipendra‚ Rabindra

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Basketball Association (NeBA) today honoured veteran hoopsters Bipendra Maharjan and Rabindra Maharjan with Lifetime Achievement Award.

The duo — who served for the national team for more than a decade playing together in seven international tournaments — were awarded for their contribution to the game. The basketball governing body also honoured the national team that won a bronze medal in the second SABA Championship held last year in Dhaka.

While Bipendra and Rabindra were rewarded with Rs 10,000, the national team was given Rs 80,000. Coach Dinesh Nakarmi also got Rs 10,000 and assistant coach Bikash Shahi got Rs 8,000. Bikash handed over the amount to the organisers of the first Kirtipur Cup basketball tournament.

It was NeBA’s first felicitation after Nepal had begun their international journey in 2001 with the first SABA Championship in India. Bipendra, who led the team in 2001 tournament, said the honour was a good gesture.

“This honour is a good recognition to our contribution to the game. In fact, it was more than what we had expected. I hope this felicitation will motivate youngsters to perform better,” said the 33-year old Bipendra.

Rabindra, popularly known as Maskey, though said it was a happy ending to his 12-year old international career. “It was a just a beginning for Nepali basketball when we started playing,” said Rabindra who has now successfully launched Nepal’s first ever basketball league — Kirtipur Cup.

“We played the game not because we wanted something in return. It was just our passion for the game and I am happy that we have got the recognition today,” he added.

NeBA also honoured the Nepali teams that competed in the first 3x3 Youth World Championships and first 3x3 World Championships. The Jhapa District Basketball Association President Umesh Khatiwada sponsored Rs 100,000 for felicitation.
